INTERVIEW: Astronomyy

We’ve been mad keen on young Astronomyy back when his bio was just “Arron from Worcestershire”. The man has come along quite a way since then, contributing to the global Zara Larsson & MNEK hit Never Forget You as well as working with newcomers like AlaynaAnd of course, he makes more than enough time for his own quality output like last month’s Rest In Paradise EP. We’ve been tracking him since 2013 so it certainly feels like time we had a chat…

First, most obvious one: why the name? Big Brian Cox fan?

I saw a space shuttle launch when I was 8 and that opens your mind. It’s irregular, like me!

We’ve been hearing your stuff since the bedroom-production days. How would you say things have evolved since then?

I’m getting better at what I do, constantly evolving. I’m still in my bedroom studio though! My bedroom studio is more like a real studio in a bedroom now though.

You initially tagged your tracks as surf/urban. Tongue-in-cheek, or plundering a new genre?

A bit of both really. In between electronic music, and indie – to bridge the gap. I had friends into all types of genres so I was influenced by them, and could give my music multiple tags.

What was the thought behind reworking some of your old tracks?

When I released those tracks I had 100 followers so I just put them out and didn’t really think about it. I didn’t realise how many people they would reach! They were just demos, so I wanted to make them better as I had progressed. They are definitely some of my best tracks.

You’re also branching out and producing for others. How would you compare it to doing your own stuff?

I treat it the same way. I worked with people that I rate. Unless they are after a specific vibe I work pretty much the same.

That cover of Into U. Firstly: what a fucking song, secondly: talk us through it.

Haha thanks! It’s like one of those songs that I heard on the radio and it has those hooks. I couldn’t stop singing it for ages it. I thought, ‘I wonder what would happen if I did something with it?’ and then I created it within a few hours.

Tell us a bit more about the new EP.

It’s a collection of songs that I have written as a miniature story – and people can interpret it differently. I wanted to start the EP off with a bang, something in your face like the hypnotized vibe. It sums up a relationship at the time, and it goes through all of those processes like infatuation, confusion, and perhaps the end of a relationship – depending on how you look at it.

Final question we ask everyone: favourite Beyonce song?

Dangerously in Love – the first track that I could not stop listening to.
