GUEST MIX: Chelcee Grimes

It’s not every day you get a former footballer being signed to a major label. But Chelcee Grimes is a new pop feather in the RCA cap, debuting her new track Just Like That today alongside an exclusive playlist for us. Considering she’s written for Kylie and Dua Lipa, it’s no surprise this one was written in 10 minutes; it’s a fun introduction to her sound, and judging by her curation below, there’s probably a lot more of that yet to come…

  • No Doubt – Don’t Speak: I love Gwen Stefani, But I think this was the moment the world first really heard her and saw how amazing she is and the song is lyrically great, and I feel every word whenever I hear her sing this song.
  • Britney Spears – Toxic: I remember watching this video for the first time like it was yesterday, it’s iconic. I was once in the same bathroom as Cathy Dennis who wrote this song and it made me need to pee even more, I was so excited!
  • Avril Lavigne – I’m With You: I love Avril and what she stood for, in a crowd of girls back then she really stood out and was the tomboy, which I really related to growing up. This song is almost perfect to me, we’ve all felt lonely haven’t we? Whenever I want to drown my sorrows I play this and take a hot bath and after I’ve screamed the middle-eight out I feel much better.
  • The Kooks – Naïve: I still have no idea what this song is about, I remember trying to google the concept and watch interviews with the band but they never confirmed anything! But it makes me feel good when the sun’s out and I like to try to sing in his accent…
  • Dua Lipa x Calvin Harris – One Kiss: This is the biggest song in the world right now and seeing as I’ve worked with both of them (I have 2 songs on Dua’s album that we wrote together back in 2016!), it was only right I included it in my playlist. Love them both!
  • Eminem – Stan: Eminem is one of my biggest inspirations. When I played “Just Like That” to my record label first they were like “This could be an Eminem record from the early ’00’s” and I knew I’d done my job because I wanted to bring that back. The world needs it. This song lyrically is genius and the video was just like WHOA.

  • Twenty One Pilots – Stressed Out: I loved this song when I heard it for the first time, then loved it even more when I saw the band. Again, I really relate to things that aren’t ordinary and these guys are anything but; Tyler is such a great songwriter and I respect how he has his own sound, I’m a big fan.
  • Lady Gaga – Bad Romance: Everybody who knows me knows I’m obsessed with Gaga! I’m not sure why we aren’t married already to be honest. But anyway – she inspired me to start writing music. The Fame album was huge for me and I actually got to write for my album with her producer RedOne in LA, and that was a moment of “WTF Chelcee, how have you managed this?!”
  • Outkast – Hey Ya!: “Shake it like a Polaroid picture” was the lyric everybody wanted to shout – this is still a classic and I reference this song a lot in my recording sessions.
  • Bonnie Raitt – I Can’t Make You Love Me: I think to me, this is a song I wish I would have written. It’s just magic. It is a perfect song to me and nobody who hears it can deny that.
  • Rihanna x Drake – Work: I’ve added this to pick the mood up on the playlist after that tearjerker – who doesn’t love a bit of RiRi?! I love Drake too, I still remember playing his first mixtape.
  • Bruno Mars – Uptown Funk: I added Bruno to keep the party going because not only was this song the one that wouldn’t die, but Bruno is one of the most talented writers / musicians we have in our generation. He’s a huge inspiration to me and I would love to collab with him one day.
  • Pink – Sober: Pink is out of this world. I love strong women who don’t conform and she is the opposite of everything around her. And that voice! I chose this song because Kara Dioguardi wrote it. I’ve written a lot of important songs on my album with Kara and she inspires me to be a better writer every time.
  • Ne-Yo – So Sick: The last song that has a weird nostalgia about it is this one. This is possibly my first music memory driving along in the car to school with my mum and she would turn this up whenever it come on the radio. She loved him and one time I played a gig with him and introduced my mum to him, she really embarrassed me and asked if she could kiss him… he said yes!
