Oh we do like ourselves a bit of JMR. The young Nashville kid (known to his mum as Joshua Michael Robinson) has us wrapped around his little finger thanks to some great EPs, the latest being the excellent Boyish. We invited him to join our Spotify playlist series so that we could find out more about his influences (the first half, which he terms “In The Day”) and what he’s listening to now (act two, aka “Lately), and we couldn’t resist adding some of his EP there at the end.
Says JMR himself: “Here are some of my favorite songs. I couldn’t not start the list with the Space Jam classic, I Believe I Can Fly. Radiohead, Kanye West, Sigur Ros and other bands growing up taught me that music could be jarring or haunting but still be beautiful and rhythmic. Jeff Buckley, Damien Rice and a few others showed me how to be emotionally honest with my music— still learning today to be more vulnerable. Lately I’ve been listening to a lot of Elliott Smith, Sharon Van Etten, Beach Boys, and others I’ve listed mainly because of their songwriting craft. Feist is a good example of that on her new record. No production gimmicks, just beautifully crafted songs.”
