We’ve loved Gordi for so long, but the first instinct here is to feel, well, irritated. The “1-2-3” beat refrain is baffling at first, but then Australia’s Sophie Payten ain’t no fool. From that aching piano to her own vocal that steeped in deeper emotion than we’ve ever heard from her before, Heaven I Know (from upcoming debut album Reservoir) is like Francis meets Sufjan but entirely owned by Gordi herself. “Heaven I know that we tried,” she resigns, with a curiously bittersweet mix of brass and string cascading around her. We might argue this to be the song of the year, you know – if it doesn’t move you in some way, we’d also argue that you’re dead inside.
