Denmark has got it going on at the moment, especially when it comes to male pop. One such talent is Alexander Oscar, who’s made a bit of a wave with his rather addictive R&B-leaning track Ocean View. We get to know the man behind the song before things inevitably start blowing up for him…
First musical memory?
I was very young, maybe 5-6 years old, but I still remember when my mom sang for me when it was bedtime, then something I would sing along and it ended up with my mom falling asleep.
First album you ever bought?
Actually I’ve never bought an album before. I don’t know why, but I think it is because of all this availability now. Everything is available online, you now can listen to all most all music ever made on Spotify, Apple Music and so on. So yeah I’ve never bought an album, but if i were, it would probably be + by Ed Sheeran.
Describe your vibe in three words (but then tell us a bit more about how Ocean View came along).
My vibe in three words would be “turn it up”! No, my vibe is kinda like dark pop, funky-fresh, with some good R&B vibes. It was actually a different process of how Ocean View came along compared to what I’m used to. In this case we had a track, not finished but just some chords, and we were in the studio making something else. Then the producer just said “try to sing something on top of this” and I just freestyled for some takes and everyone liked it. Then I began writing some stuff down. I kinda knew where I wanted to go with the song. It was actually an easier process than many of my other songs.
Look, we’ve got to ask: did you actually fuck for hours with an ocean view? More importantly, which ocean?
Hah! No we didn’t. That line was kind of a joke thing, but I just kept going back to it when we were recording it. So I said, “let’s just go with fuck for hours”.
Your inspirations, musical and otherwise?
I really love the writing universe of ed Sheeran and The Weeknd! So I definitely take inspiration from those guys. Music-wise I kind of just make what I feel like making. I don’t wanna limit myself by focusing on just one genre, if that makes sense. That’s why I usually mix different genres together.
What are your current jams?
Chunky – Bruno mars, Happier – Ed Sheeran, Morning – Marc E. Bassy.
Your dream collaborations?
I would love to work with NAO in the future! She’s so awesome and she’s in the front of what she’s doing right now! Nothing but respect!
The Danish music scene is bursting at the moment. Firstly, what are you guys drinking and secondly do you look around to other acts at all?
Beers… lots of beers! But yes – Lukas Graham for sure. They are one of the reasons there’s so many eyes on the Danish music scenes at the moment. I’ve got nothing but respect and love for what they’re doing.
And finally: Favourite Beyonce song?
I Was Here for sure! Beautiful song, and for a good cause!
