UPCOMING: biLLLy

We do have a lot of time for rising act biLLLy, despite the infuriating typography. His new track Can’t Blame (out to buy and stream now) is a funky bit of leftfield bedroom-boppery that deserves to be heard, and so we thought something a bit better than a usual Upcoming post might be in order. Here’s a little Q&A for you to get to know the lad more before you stream the track below.

First musical memory?

Probably playing ‘Georgia on my Mind’ on the trumpet whilst my Dad jammed on the piano.

First album you ever bought?

Californication!

Describe your vibe in three words (but then do tell us a bit more about the tracks)

Colourful, soulful and catchy.

Ultimately I wanted these tracks to be catchy pop songs that would challenge the listener but still give enough to keep them engaged. It’s dance music like people know it but with a different approach. A collage of old disco samples, fat subby bass and quirky keyboards.

That name spelling. There’s a story there isn’t there?

I wanted to keep the name simple, Billy for obvious reasons was the natural fit.  There are just too many great Billy’s for me to tread on the toes of… Billy Idol, Billy Preston, Billy Joel… not to mention Billie Piper, so a little extra dimension would consolidate this identity, hence, literally, the extra dimensional ‘L’. There’s only one biLLLy.

An album you would never listen to again?

Never say never, I always find when going back to old records it’s surprising what you can take from them even if they did suck the first time round.

Your inspirations, musical and otherwise?

Groove-based music largely, 70’s disco and RnB are a big part of my inspiration. Anything that makes me want to get into the feel and dance.

What are your current jams?

Kaytranada – ‘Leave Me Alone’, Okay Kaya – ‘Keep on Pushin’, Alicia Keys – ‘In Common’

Any guilty pleasures, musical or non?

Early Nicolas Cage movies and Backstreet Boys.

Favourite Beyonce song?

7/11.
