OK, so you might associate the name Janice with an annoying laugh from Friends. But this Janice is much easier on the ears, a talent that traversed Sweden and London to give us Queen. With an upcoming album Fallin Up to back the track (which you can order here), we sent over a Q&A to find out more about the woman behind that powerhouse vocal.
First musical memory?
I don’t know if it’s the first but I remember seeing my mother dancing and singing along to “Because You Loved Me” by Celine Dion and being amazed by her and Celine!
First album you ever bought?
Bee Gees – Saturday Night Fever. Your girl loves disco apparently.
Describe your vibe in three words (but then tell us a bit more about your debut album).
Raw, hopeful, melancholic. “Fallin Up” is 12 tracks of my stories. It’s about things and people that have affected me in some way. It starts from a place and a state where I felt lost that grows into how I found my way. It’s about heartbreaks, grief, love and speaking my truth.
We hear you’re a mega Whitney fan. How mega are we talking here?
Huge. She really affected me and so many other people with her voice and magical talent.
An album you would never listen to again?
Wow that’s harsh! I don’t have one.
Your inspirations, musical and otherwise?
Solange, Banks and Matt Corby have been huge influences when writing music. Whitney Houston inspires me so much as s singer and a woman. One of my biggest inspirations is my sister, Nicole. She’s been through a lot but never let’s it keep her down and is so determined and so strong yet so warming and loving. She makes me a better person.
Any guilty pleasures, musical or non?
Reality shows for sure, like Paradise Hotel.
And finally: Favourite Beyonce song?
I Was Here.
