DJs, producers, they’re everywhere these days and anyone can become one. What’s harder is standing out, and that’s exactly what London’s LOXE does on his x TAPE mixtape. Featuring the likes of TALA, Alyss, and Frank Gamble, it’s a fine blend of dark trap, R&B, and more that’s well worth your time. We popped over our Upcoming Q&A to find out more about the man behind the brilliant beats…

First musical memory?
A recorder lesson when I was about 6

First album you ever bought?
I actually think it was the Spice Girls on tape!

Describe your vibe in three words (but then tell us a bit more about the mixtape).
“Has to vibe”. I do a lot of production for other people and the mixtape was a way of me to collaborate with some friends and put something out under my own name. A way to cross over between my sound and theirs, and stay open about the direction of the song, whilst making something that sat between my musical world and theirs. Each tune sits in a different space, but hopefully there’s a consistency of creativity across them.

How did you decide on who to collaborate with?
It was mostly based around who I was hanging / working with at that time. I had a bunch of different beats/ideas that I sent around a few people, and this is where we got to once we collaborated on some of them. I think the first collab I made for the mixtape was a remix I did for NAO of ‘Feels Like’ (ft Stormzy), which she ended up using on her own remix EP, and whilst making that I just sent a bunch of messages / beats around and saw what came back.

An album you would never listen to again?
The Teletubbies album.

Your inspirations, musical and otherwise?
Musically, anything that feels creative and has a vibe. Something that shows me something a bit different but still makes me nod my head, or look inwards, or sing along etc.

What are your current jams?
Daniel Caesar – Get You (ft Kali Uchis), Vince Staples – Big Fish, Nosaj Thing – Don’t Mind Me, J HUS – Did You See.

Any guilty pleasures, musical or non?
Service station sweets, chicken wings, dancehall.

And finally: Favourite Beyonce song?
Crazy In Love.
