Sweden has a bursting pop scene, and when it comes to the leftfield they’re bringing it just has hard. The Magnettes are a trio full of impressive jams on their new album Ugly Youth (which you can stream below) so we got to know them a bit better with our Upcoming Q&A…
First musical memory?
Sanna: I just remember being very little and knowing ALL the lyrics to A LOT of local drinking songs!
Rebecka: My dad, performing with a band, dressed in a bathing suit and a wig designed to look like pubic hair.
Tomas: Pushing the buttons on my grandfather’s accordion, being super-fascinated by the sound.
First album you ever bought?
Sanna: Emilia – Big Big Girl
Rebecka: Lene Marlin – Playing My Game
Tomas: The Beatles – Help
Describe your vibe in three words (but then tell us a bit more about the new album)
Gritty, playful, honest. It deals a lot with growing up, like sneaking out, breaking rules, finding yourself and what you really care about. We decided early on that we wanted to keep things straight-forward, like really simple and to-the-point, and not write normative self-obsessed diary posts nor get anywhere near terms like ”perfection”. We didn’t want to talk about perfect bodies or cool clubs or nights on the beach because it’s so not interesting. We wanted to write pop songs for people like us, who might feel weird or different or are just trying to find their own context.
We recorded most of it in Tomas’s kitchen, so it’s pretty raw sonically just from the limitations we had, but it still has all the elements that we love. Lots of lo-fi synths and drum machines, string machines and rautalanka guitars.
An album you would never listen to again?
Oh shit, these are the questions you don’t want to answer because either the albums get resurrected and hailed as groundbreaking and you’re a big asshole, or you end up meeting the artist and they’re super-nice people and you’re an even bigger asshole! That being said, we could probably go pretty happily through life without hearing another white-dude jazz/fusion/metal/classical-hybrid instrumental bass guitar album.
Your inspirations, musical and otherwise?
Our heroes are Kathleen Hanna, Tina Weymouth and Robyn. We’re really into Top-40 pop, the riot grrrl scene, new wave in general, early hiphop, kraut, old-school Swedish punk and Spice Girls.
What are your current jams?
Tove Styrke – Say My Name, Astrid S – Breathe, Rich White Ladies – No Bad Vibez, Dagny – Wearing Nothing.
Any guilty pleasures, musical or non?
Nah, way past guilt, but currently really into Keeping Up With The Kardashians and NHL trash talk clips on YouTube. Let’s just all admit that we love Justin Bieber and that this commercial is funny af.
And finally: Favourite Beyonce song?
Ugly Youth is out now and can be ordered here, and you can stream it below.
